This year, once again for many underprivileged kids in the Cedar Rapids area, Santa will be wearing a badge and driving a police car. The Cedar Rapids Protective Police Charity is raising money for their annual Santa Cop program, where local officers will take kids shopping for warm winter clothes and perhaps a few toys as well.

Flashback to December, 2016…from the moment you stepped into the store, you could feel the excitement. There were kids of all ages pairing up with their police officers and getting to know each other before the shopping began. From being silly and making up games with the younger kids to smiling discussions with the older kids, there was some real heart to heart bonding happening.

This year, once again for many underprivileged kids in the Cedar Rapids area, Santa will be wearing a badge and driving a police car. The Cedar Rapids Protective Police Charity is raising money for their annual Santa Cop program, where local police officers will take kids shopping for warm winter clothes and perhaps a few toys as well.

During the holiday season, it becomes harder for low income and disadvantaged kids whose parents are struggling to find extra cash in their budget to purchase gifts. Some of these kids have a tough time over the holidays, watching their friends at school come back after the holiday break with new clothes, new shoes, new coats and especially the latest, greatest toys. Well, the Cedar Rapids Police Department is working hard to change that by spending some quality time with these great kids and ensuring they have a great Christmas too.

This year, the charity is working with Collins Community Credit Union and Target to make the magic happen and we are all about adding elf dust to the whole thing. For just $5 you can help purchase a new hat or mittens that will help keep the kiddos in our community warm and cozy this season.

It’s amazing that the Cedar Rapids Police Department does this for these kids and their families each year, but we think the best part of the event is the bond that is formed between the kids and the officers. For many kids, this is their first real interaction with the police. This event promotes healthy communication between officers and the community and wraps the whole experience up like a big present on Christmas morning.

Please help us pread some cheer to those in need this year. The more money raised, the more children are able to be helped, and even the smallest donations help! And the best part? 100% of the donations go directly to the kids. Stop by any Collins Community Credit Union Cedar Rapids branch to make a monetary donation or donate online at crpolicecharity.com.
